Q. What are some characteristics effective leaders share?
A. Effective leaders share similar characteristics, one of which is the ability to listen. They know they don’t have all the answers and are eager to involve the ideas and expertise of their team. As such, they’re aware of the importance of inclusiveness, and seek to be available and transparent, rather than hiding in a fancy corner office.
Empathy is another big characteristic of a great leader. They see you as a human being, not a cog in a machine that exists to turn a profit. They understand you and your role, and thus can advise you on the best way to accomplish your goals.
True leaders lead by example; they walk the walk. For example, if you’re required to be in the office by 9 a.m., your boss should also be there by 9 a.m. (or earlier), not strolling in at 10:30.
Above all, an excellent leader treats you with respect and they realize they’re not above the rules—in turn, this behavior generates respect from others.
