Nurses—not businesspeople—are behind some of the best companies in health care

There are an estimated 500 nurse-led clinics in the U.S. and that number continues to climb. Check out these six companies and the jobs they have to offer.

Nurses—not businesspeople—are behind some of the best companies in health care

In 1881, a nurse named Clara Barton started what would soon become one of the world’s most renowned names in health care: the American Red Cross. But nurses have come a long way since Barton’s time, and countless others have also made their entrepreneurial dreams come true.

“There has been tremendous growth in the nurse-managed health clinics, especially prior to the Affordable Care Act implementation, but certainly also now,” Tine Hansen-Turton, CEO of the National Nursing Centers Consortium told Marketplace, an online news publication distributed by American Public Media. She said there are about 500 nurse-led clinics around the country, and that number will only grow as providers look for less pricey ways to provide health care.

Nurse-founded companies can be an appealing place to direct your job search for a few reasons. If you’re a nurse, these companies all place a high value on your work because, well, they’ve been in your shoes scrubs before.  And as a health care professional, you’ll benefit from the flexible hours, welcoming environments and job security many of these places offer. Not to mention, many of these organizations are family-operated or owned by women.
