It can be hard to picture what large corporations like the Googles, Microsofts, and Amazons of the world were like when they first opened up shop. But every successful company—and professional—has to start somewhere, and getting in on the ground floor of “the next big thing” can be pretty exciting and rewarding.

Recently, the 2017 Kauffman Index of Growth Entrepreneurship, a study that measures startup growth by focusing on metrics such as employment, business creation, and geography, released its annual list of cities with the highest startup growth.

Washington, D.C., leads the ranking, followed by Austin, Texas; Columbus, Ohio; Nashville, and Atlanta.
