Q. I'm burnt out. What now?

A. If you’re suffering from burnout, take a break. Financially, you may not be able to quit your job without a new one lined up, but even if you can up and leave your current job, it’s important to take care of yourself.

Self-care should be your number one priority. Go back to the basics. Get a decent night’s sleep of seven or eight hours. Keep your smartphone outside your bedroom. Limit your time on social media. Go for a walk in a park. Focus on your breathing. Download meditation podcasts. Attend a yoga class regularly. Take up jogging or kickboxing to blow off steam. Read a good book. Write in a journal. Refuel your body with excellent nutrition. Try to eliminate negative thoughts (as well as people) from your life. Regroup.

Rejuvenating yourself, both your mind and body, is key to not only surviving but also thriving. Awareness is the first step, so the fact that you realize you’re burned out and things need to change is an excellent sign.

Our bodies aren’t machines, so it’s important to continue your new self-care rituals (even going for a 15-minute walk during lunchtime can be helpful) to help prevent another burnout.
